Welcome to S. Howlett-West Books

NEW INFORMATION:

May Day, oh May Day...

May Day is a wonderful day. It means that here in California, the weather (usually) is warming up or may be already nice and toasty.  This year we're starting off May worrying about water. February was a dry month. April was a dry month (meaning no rain - and it didn't rain at all during the last two months). So summer starts to look dry, dusty and ripe for fires even though it's not even here yet.  Last year's fire season was long and brutal. This year's fire season could start even earlier, go longer (depending on when the weather turns this fall) and be even costlier in terms of money, man-power and houses and acreage lost to fire.

But, while that stark fact is stuck in the back of Californian's minds, the upturn in weather is always a good thing -- sunshine hits us and we turn into outdoors freaks -- swimming, gardening, bar-b-que-ing and sports. We're not going to worry to hard about the future for the moment & enjoy the great weather we do have now.

May is also a big birthday month for my family. My youngest son has his birthday on May Day (May 1st) so we are working up to major birthday party time. Also my husband, my mother-in-law and several of his relatives have natal days in the middle of May. The month is rounded out by the birthday of my niece on May 31st making the book end effect. First & last days of the month.  May is a good month indeed.

Speaking of fire area, the Gold Rush Book Fair in Grass Valley, CA.  (held on May 17th. Gold Rush Book Fair )  is in Fire  country -- Grass Valley is tucked into the foothills of the Sierra's and it's prime area for fires because of all the wonderful prairie grasses and rolling hills there.  Grass Valley and it's sister town Nevada City are old Gold Rush era towns with a shared historic past of the California Gold (and Silver) mining days. The towns are still rigged out in late 1870's style (though there are modern bathrooms added most places). It's a wonderful area to visit, with lots of interesting historic sites, good food and entertainment too.  And of course, there's the Book Fair.

Two weeks later, the Pasadena Book Fair (May 31st - June 1st. Pasadena Book Fair  will take me down to Pasadena, California which is just up the road from Hollywood and the whole Southern California experience.  Unfortunately, I don't usually get to see much of Southern California as I'm at the book fair most of the day, but it's a great place to visit and the city of Pasadena is a beautiful place with wonderful Frank Lloyd Wright style bungalow homes that are very nifty to look at (and most of them are SOOO well kept with great front yard gardens too).

I'm looking forward to both fairs & hope I have a pile of new & exciting material to offer for each fair. Speaking of which, I am looking to buy some new good material. I'm especially looking for some Science Fiction / Fantasy First Editions or special children's picture books, but I do take other material as well.

The Theme for this week is Signed Children's Picture Books
