Happy New Year!
January 2012.
Wow.
Last year came and went in a flash (though there were times where days felt like months and one or two months felt as if they would never end) and the new year is already well under way.
I do have a few resolutions that I will try and put into effect this year, but I'm not going to list them here -- I've done that in the past and found that in less than two months, all my resolutions blew away with the wind and I felt awful because I had posted them (fully expecting to follow through) and then couldn't.
So no outward signs of resolutions. Just back to the business of finding good books and listing them.
I am back to trying to list books on a daily basis -- something which fell by the wayside much of the last five months of last year as I had taken on a part time job to help stabilize finances. The job went from part time to almost full time, and then on to full time and into overtime for the Christmas season (which was quite nice for the finances) and then it dropped off nearly instantaneously and I'm back to being a full time book seller.
The nice thing about taking time off for a different job is that you get a chance to step away from all the minutiae that is the collectable bookselling world and all the things that can make the business less than fun -- so that when you come back, you have a better perspective. I think that's what happened to me. I was away just enough that I can once again appreciate the good parts of the business and not completely dwell on the negatives.
I'm going to take that attitude going forward this year. I will do my best to keep the joy alive and work on that instead of worrying about all the niggly little things.
(this is not a resolution, by the way, just an observation)
I will continue to try and hone in on what I find interesting in the world of books -- because, in the end, being a book dealer isn't just about selling a bunch of faceless books. It's about finding books and subjects that interest me and making them available to others who share that same interest.
