George Ivanovitch Gurdgjieff was born in 1877 in Alexandropol, near the Persian frontier of Russia, where the ancient tradions of patriarchal life were still a living influence. After his family had suffered great losses and moved to Kars, his father's friend, the daen of the Cathedral, took charge of the boy's education and arranged for him to be trained both as a priest and a physician. While supporting himself to pursue these studies, Gurdjieff acquired unusual dexterity in many trades."

"Lu Hsun has been called by the Chinese the generalissimo of the Chinese cultural revolution. A revolutionary writer he most certainly was, but like Dante and Chaucer, perhaps his greatest contribution was that, trained and immersed though he was in the Chinese classics, he was also the man who brought the vernacular into literature. Feng Hsueh-Feng, a contemporary Chinese writer and critic, who wrote the introduction to this volume of stories, essays, and reminiscences, has, himself seen and felt the influence of Lu Hsun's work on the revolution and on the new literature of China."
