Rifts, Rocks, And Tree Skins: An Installation, Barnett, John (with Contributions by Tommi Lou Carousella, James Kuiper, Randall Shiroma, and Hope Werness)
1 Barnett, John (with Contributions by Tommi Lou Carousella, James Kuiper, Randall Shiroma, and Hope Werness) Rifts, Rocks, And Tree Skins: An Installation
Turlock, CA California State University, Stanislaus 1998 1st Edition; 1st Printing Brochure Very Good+
B&W Photographs; This is a series of single sheet poems, photographs and illustrations in a fold-over cardstock folio / brochure. The entire brochure is in Very Good+ condition and was issued without a dust jacket. The off-white cardstock folio has some lightly ground-in dirt. There are twenty-four single pages with text, photo or illustration on the rectos only. The brochure was produced to accompany an installation at the University Art Gallery (at CSU Stanislaus) from February 17- April 2, 1998. "How often do we pause to comtemplate the details of our surroundings? John Barnett's work invites us to appreciate the beauty to be found in the textures of bark and earth, to smile in recognition of things seen, yet no seen, perhaps a hundred times before. It surprises us with familiar shapes in unfamiliar colors, and with a change in perspective, small things made large, which compels our attention." "John’s grounding in nature and the outdoors come from his formative years spent exploring the tidal mud flats close to his family home on Barbridge Island in Puget’s Sound in Washington State. Endless summers were spent sleeping outdoors cradled by spent razorbill shells, waking to the screech of sea eagles soaring overhead in the dawn skies and the sounds of waves crashing onto a beach. His introduction to nature came from accompanying his father and brothers backpacking, walking and fishing the magical ever-changing area between the land and the sea of his surrounding landscape."

This issue gives an overview of the artist George Inness. "Although Inness’s style evolved through distinct stages over a prolific career that spanned more than forty years and 1,000 paintings, his works consistently earned acclaim for their powerful, coordinated efforts to elicit depth of mood, atmosphere, and emotion. Neither pure realist nor impressionist, Inness was a transitional figure who intended for his works to combine both the earthly and the ethereal in order to capture the complete essence of a locale. A master of light, color, and shadow, he became noted for creating highly ordered and complex scenes that often juxtaposed hazy or blurred elements with sharp and refined details to evoke an interweaving of both the physical and the spiritual nature of experience."

The cardstock covers have edge wear, nicks, tears and several large chips missing. The spine of the magazine has tearing and chipping to both top and bottom ends. The text pages are clean and bright. This issue gives an overview of the artist Albert Moore. "His early works shows the influence of Ruskin. In 1859 he was in France with the architect William Eden Nesfield. In 1861, he made a new venture with two sacred subjects, 'The Mother of Sisera looked out of a Window,' and 'Elijah running to Jezreel before Ahab's Chariot'. Meanwhile, Moore had given signs of the remarkable skill which he afterwards displayed as a decorative artist. The 1860s saw Moore designing tiles, wallpaper and stained glass for Morris, Marshall, Faulkner and Co. , and working as an ecclesiastic and domestic mural painter. During this period his works began to take on a markedly neo-classical character, Moore making an extensive study of antique sculpture, particularly the Elgin marbles in the British Museum. His concern for decorative, color harmonies became apparent in his paintings of the mid 1860s onwards. His works, typically single female figures with formalized proportions, neo-classical drapery and floral accessories, established a major strand of the Aesthetic Movement."

The book and its contents are in generally clean, bright condition. There is some light bumping, rubbing and wear to the edges of the covers. The text pages are mostly clean and bright. There is an inked previous owner's name on the inside front cover of the book. "A monoprint is a single impression of an image made from a reprintable block. Materials such as metal plates, litho stones or wood blocks are used for etching upon. Rather than printing multiple copies of a single image, only one impression may be produced, either by painting or making a collage on the block. Etching plates may also be inked in a way that is expressive and unique in the strict sense, in that the image cannot be reproduced exactly. Monoprints may also involve elements that change, where the artist reworks the image in between impressions or after printing so that no two prints are absolutely identical. Monoprints may include collage, hand-painted additions, and a form of tracing by which thick ink is laid down on a table, paper is placed on top and is then drawn on, transferring the ink onto the paper. Monoprints can also be made by altering the type, color, and pressure of the ink used to create different prints. When you create a monoprint, it is possible to copy work from separate pieces of artwork onto one monoprint."
