And the Holt Manufacturing Company merged to form Caterpillar Tractor Co. : leading track-type tractor builders of that time, the two firms had chosen an old and familiar Holt trademark for use in their new corporate name. This anniversary book tells the story of Caterpillar - and its important predecessors - from a beginning rooted in Nineteenth Century soil." "Daniel Best was a competitor of the Holt concern. Best had established small factories in Oakland, California, and Albany, Oregon, by 1879 where he manufactured grain cleaners and separators. In 1885, Best had built and sold his first combined harvester. Because of his expanding product line and limited space at his factories, he purchased the existing plant and property of the San Leandro Plow Company in San Leandro, California. Setting up a new company, the Daniel Best Agricultural Works, Best relocated all of his production there in late 1886 and closed the Albany and Oakland plants. Best bought the rights to another inventor's steam-powered tractor, and began production of steam traction engines in 1889. Early recognition of the limitations of steam power led Daniel Best to tinker with gasoline-fired internal combustion engines around 1890. In 1893, Daniel Best renamed his company and incorporated it as the Best Manufacturing Company, and in that year produced his first gasoline-powered tractor. But for a period of years thereafter, gasoline tractors were still experimental, and production of the factory consisted largely in steam tractors and in combined harvesters."

"A gasoline engine is a type of internal combustion engine that burns gasoline for fuel. It uses a spark ignition system to generate an electrical charge with spark plugs that ignites the fuel and air inside a cylinder resulting in fuel combustion. The fuel is then heated and expands inside the cylinder, generating mechanical energy. Almost all vehicles on the road today run on a gasoline engine. A gasoline engine is also referred to as a petrol engine as petrol is another, primarily British term for gasoline. In a gasoline engine, the fuel and air are premixed before compression occurs. This is how gasoline engines differ from diesel engines, another type of internal combustion engine, in which the air is first compressed and then the fuel added at the end of compression stroke." "

After spreading across the country, the sport traveled around the world; first to Australia in 1934 at Melbourne's Olympic Park on December 15, and to New Zealand in 1937. Early midget races were held on board tracks previously used for bicycle racing. When the purpose built speedway at Gilmore Stadium was completed, racing ended at the school stadium, and hundreds of tracks began to spring up across the United States. Angell Park Speedway in Sun Prairie, Wisconsin (near Madison) is another major track in the United States operating since the first half of the twentieth century." "n 1931 the Oakland Speedway was built near Oakland, but actually was located between Oakland and nearby Hayward, California, on the site of what is now Bayfair Mall in San Leandro, California. Annually each fall the track hosted the "Oakland 500" race. Many of the local East Bay races were exhibited by the Bay Cities Racing Association (BCRA). In 1948 local East Bay driver Bob Barkhimer quit racing to become the Business Manager for BCRA. In 1949 Barkhimer took over San Jose Speedway and also started his own association (CSCRA) , and in 1954 he co-founded west coast NASCAR."

"Many collector car clubs throughout the U. S and the rest of the world recognize specialty marques or a broad spectrum of makes and years of manufacture. Very few remaining collectible automobiles represent the dawning of the age of the automobile industry. This unique period of automotive history covers the turn of the century to the end of carriage coachwork, gas lights, hand cranking and profuse use of brass. For the most part, only the wealthy owned automobiles during this pre 1916 era, and ownership required a pioneering spirit, inventiveness and superior mechanical ability to keep these early automobiles functioning. These early automobiles were called horseless carriages as they were capable of transporting people and freight faster and longer distance without the need of a horse to pull them. Unlike a horse, the automobile did not require feeding or veterinarians to maintain health when not in service, but like a horse they often got a colorful language/lecture by the owner when they would not perform. In essence, all automobiles are Horseless Carriages, but HCCA has defined the Horseless Carriage as any pioneer gas, steam and electric motor vehicle built or manufactured prior to January 1, 1916. "Around 1900, she travelled with writer/husband, Francis Miltoun (Milburg Francisco Mansfield) , throughout Europe and North Africa. Their collaboration led to a series of travel books, fully illustrated by McManus. M. F. Mansfield was a writer and and had an apparently short-lived (ca. 1897 to ca 1900) publishing house [M. F. Mansfield and Co. , later to be known as M. F. Mansfield and A. Wessels. ] The couple is probably best known for a series of illustrated travel books which incorporated the newly invented automobile within a typical travelog of the period. Blanche McManus' sketches and water colors of the people they met and views of architectural/natural scenes adds an interesting element to the books. "
