B&W Illustrations; This is a group of four sheets of paper, stapled on the left side and folded in thirds. The pages give samples of types available through this type foundry. All pages are printed on rectos only and are clean and bright. The first page includes a stapled price sheet dated June 1, 1976. "The Bell Type and Rule Company has been family owned and operated since 1932. The monotype on the left is still in operation today making hand set, type fonts daily. The company's found a home in Long Beach, CA in the basement of a building where the Bell's rented an apartment. During that time the only means of picking up metal was to use the family car. 'We would use wood planks and by hand run the barrel up the planks and tie it to the trunk of the 36 Desoto Coup. Then tie itagain to the bumper. And you guessed it down went the back of the car. Imagine the weight of a trash can mostly filled with old type weighs in around 1200 pounds."

"The writer Kathryn Hulme made significant contributions to the humanitarian efforts in Europe after World War II as an administrator with the United Nations Relief and Refugee Agency (UNRRA) ; she wrote a number of books exploring life during and after the war, including The Wild Place (1953). While she was working with displaced persons in Europe, Hulme met Marie-Louise Habets, who would later become Hulmeís inspiration for The Nunís Story (1956) , a fictionalization of the former nunís life. "

The endpapers have several spots of foxing / spotting. "A work on illustrated books, if it is itself to be illustrated, suffers one serious disadvantage. The original graphic processes - etching, wood-engraving, lithography and the rest - must inevitably lose some of their individual quality owing to the effect of photographic reproduction."

The text pages are mostly clean and bright, though there is some light toning to the edges of the pages. Included are black and white illustrations along with some very striking black and white photographs. "Etching is simply a process of printing in intaglio. That is, instead of a method of taking an impression on paper from a series of raised lines, etching is a form of engraving in which lines are eaten into a flat surface, these depressions being filled with ink then transferred to paper under pressure."
