This is a full morocco leather photographic album with raised and tooled decorations and porcelain beads on the front and rear covers and raised and tooled decorations on the spine. This book also includes two brass clasps with decorations and porcelain beads. The binding, the clasps and the interior hinges on this book are all in Very Good or better condition. It's unusual for the clasps, with their raised decorations to be in such nice clean, intact condition. This is an early version of the "Hinged Back" photographic album patented by Altemus & Co. In 1863. "By 1864 Altemus was touting its special photographic album design. "It having the advantage of laying open perfectly flat..." Altemus had the patent for the "hinged back" design. As described by Altemus--" each leaf is attached to a small rod covered with morocco forming a separate hinge of its own, admitting the book to be opened to its full extent without danger of the slightest injury". " The album contains 42 carte de visite photographs from Sacramento, CA and San Francisco, CA . Some of the photos have notations discreetly in the lower margins. Several of the cards have been notated on the reverse - two are of particular interest : Joseph Levison and Mrs. J. Levison. There is a Joseph Levison naturalized 1866 in Northern California and this name also appears in regards to CA historical Landmark 654 : the first Jewish Synagogue owned by a congregation on the Pacific Coast. Joseph Levison was one of the officers of B'nai Israel who purchased the edifice. Both husband and wife were recorded in California's social register in San Francisco from the 1870s through the 1930s.

The album contains 15 carte de visite photographs from Sacramento, San Jose, San Francisco, and Santa Clara, CA . The 16th and final carte de visite is from Mantorville, MN and is of a lady (c1860's) in formal pose, which includes a colorized jacket. The photographs are all in generally Very Good or better condition (most are Very Good+ but a couple have noticable wear). Only one card has a personal signature at the bottom, making these cards difficult to pin down.

Laid in is a folded, tri-fold pamplhet "Our Flag: It's History and Traditions" told by the U. S. Marines. When fully opened, it shows several of the different iterations of the US Flag through the centuries. This brochure was also printed for the Golden Gate International Expostion.

He was the director of the Bancroft Library at the University of California, Berkeley for 17 years...As a student at UC Berkeley, Hammond had worked as a student employee in the Bancroft library. In 1946, Hammond was appointed director of the Bancroft Library, which he helped develop from a small library primarily for scholars into a modern research library. During his time as director, he added to the library collections, expanded staff and specialists, and obtained new resources for the library. Hammond's contributions to the library included the purchase of a collection of Robert D. Honeymoon's paintings and original drawings. Hammond also edited a manuscript by Thomas O. Larkin, printed as The Larkin Papers. He retired in 1965, but continued his research and maintained a position at the Bancroft Library."

The county seat is Modesto. Stanislaus County comprises the Modesto Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first European to see it was Gabriel Moraga in 1806. It was later named Rio Estanislao in honor of Estanislao, a mission-educated renegade Native American chief who led a band of Native Americans in a series of battles against Mexican troops until finally being defeated by General Mariano Vallejo in 1826. Estanislao was his baptismal name, the Spanish version of Stanislaus (Polish: Stanislaw) , itself the Latin version of the name of an 11th-century Polish Catholic Saint Stanislaus the Martyr."
