B&W Illustrations; This is a two volume set, bound in morocco with embossed leather and gilt . A. E. G. (all edges gilt). The gilding on the covers and spines has dulled. The two volumes are in Very Good+ condition with some rubbing and wear to the leather at the corners, edges and hinges. The front and rear hinges have some tearing and have apparently been professionally repaired at some point in the past. The text pages and illustrations are all in very clean, bright condition, though there is some light foxing throughout. The salmon colored endpapers have noticeable foxing and there are notations from previous owners on both volumes. "The volumes display both steel and wood engravings based on the paintings of some of the best American landscape painters of the nineteenth century, such as John Frederick Kensett, William Stanley Haseltine, James David Smillie, John William Casilear, Thomas Moran, A. C. Warren, Harry Fenn, David Johnson, Granville Perkins, John Douglas Woodward et al..." "This ambitious work was published and delivered as a subscription; semi-monthly parts were sent out to subscribers. Once complete, the subscription would be bound into volumes. A variety of bindings were available, from cloth-bound with leather corners at the low end to full Morocco leather bindings with elaborate tooling. The stately bound two volume set was proudly displayed in parlors of subscriber homes as a show of status. "
