Mangum, A. W. and party U.S. DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURE RECONNOISSANCE SURVEY OF SOUTHWESTERN WASHINGTON Washington, DC Government Printing Office 1913 1st Edition; 1st Printing Paperback Very Good+ Maps; This edition is paperback. Spine ends & corners of book covers have a bit of light bumping, rubbing & edge wear. Mottled tan paper covered boards have black lettering to the front cover of the book. There are a couple of small spots of discoloration to the front and rear covers of the book. A previous owner's name is inked in very small script (and neatly) at the top edge of the front cover of the book. There is a tear to the top spine end of the book cover (more accurately, two tears with a sliver of paper that folds away from the spine if touched). There is a wrinkled tear to the rear edge of the rear cover of the book (the tear looks as if it could have happened during the cutting process). The text pages are clean & bright. The first couple of pages have some toning to the edges & the last map at the rear of the book has dark toning to the edge that sits closest to the rear book cover. At the rear of the book, four large maps have been sewen in. Most are in very nice condition. The last map has some beginning tearing to the portion that has been sewn in and the third map has a two inch tear to the last folded page (the one that is visible right before the fourth map begins). Map number one has a tear to the rear page (visible when facing map number two). The maps are VERY large & unfolding them is a real challenge. The are quite brittle and the creases don't appreciate being unfolded. The data was collected for this reconnoissance survey in 1911 and collated throughout 1912 under Inspector in Charge Macy H. Lapham. The survey, and the maps give exquisite detail regarding the types of soil found in most areas of Washington State (the maps have great color throughout detailing the separate types of soil. The survey gives both a general soil map and a land classification map. Overall, a very good+ copy. "The area surveyed includes all of Pacific and Wahkiakum Counties, the western part of Lewis County, all of Clarke and Cowlitz Counties, with the exception of a few mountainous townships, and that part of Skamania County that lies south of the National Forest Reserve. The areas within these counties not covered by the survey consist principally of rough mountainous lands, lands still covered by a dense forest growth, or lands lying within the National Forests. The total area surveyed is 4,136 Square miles, or 2,647,040 arcres." Price:
