Starr 1960 1st Edition; 1st Printing Hardcover Near Fine with no dust jacket This book is in Near Fine condition and appears to have been issued without a dust jacket. The book and its contents are in clean, bright condition. There is some very beginning rubbing / wear to the spine ends and corners of the book cover. The Text pages are clean and bright. There are a couple of stray finger marks to the front endpaper edges. Included with the text is one fold out, roughly drawn map of the Alaskan / Canadian / Russian area. The book includes a black and white photographic frontispiece of the author dated 1899. "From 1852 to 1857, due to the large production of placer gold in California, the United States enjoyed what has been called the California Gold Inflation Prosperity Period. Soon thereafter came the Civil War with the ususal war inflation, causing the wholesale commodity price index level to rise from 100 (average for the nineteenth century) to a top of 225. By 1870 the price index had settled back to 140. For the following twenty seven years, except for a short period in the early 1880's, deflation persisted in the national economy." Price:
