First Edition, First Issue with ads dated July, 1855. 8pp ads, 154p, 1p author's previous works available page. Green cloth covered boards have gild lettering to the spine of the book. Decorative stamping to the covers and stamped rules to the spine of the book. There is a slight slant to the spine of the book. Spine ends have some light bumping. There is a small edge tear to the bottom rear spine joint with some beginning fraying, and another slightly longer edge tear to the top rear spine joint, also with some beginning fraying. Corners are lightly bumped with some beginning wear and loss. Covers of book have some spotting / light fading (more noticeable spotting to the rear cover than the front). Text pages are generally clean & bright, though there is some light finger dirt and beginning foxing. Endpapers are yellow chalked endpapers. Both inner hinges have cracks (rear is lightly cracked, the front hinge has more noticeable wear but it is where the ads have been added in. The date on the top corner of the first page of ads is July, 1855, making this a first state copy. This book of poems includes: Maud, The Brook; an Idyl, The Letters, Ode on the Death of the Duke of Wellington, The Daisy, To the Rev. F. D. Maurice, Will, and, The Charge of the Light Brigade. This is the first book printing of the poem The Charge of the Light Brigade, which was published previously only in The Examiner (Dec 9, 1854). This copy has penciled in notations at the end of the previous poem (Will) opposite the first stanza of the Charge of the Light Brigade which show the changes that the published form had from the one issued in the Examiner. Overall a very good to near very good+ solid copy.
