B&W Photographs; This book is in Very Good+ condition and has a Very Good+ dust jacket. The book and its contents are in clean, bright condition. The endpapers are illustrated with maps and both front and rear endpapers have some beginning toning / darkening. There is a small edge tear to the top front endpaper edge. The price clippped dust jacket has some light edge wear, nicking and a couple of beginning edge tears. "The Bear was purchased by the United States in 1884 because she was specially equipped to withstand treacherous ice conditions, and the scientific expedition led by Lieutenant W. Greely to the northern tip of Greenland was in trouble. The Bear was a St. John's sealer, built of oak, her hull doubled and redoubled and sheathed with ironbark. the rescue of Greely was the beginning of her long service to the United States."
