The spine ends and corners of the book cover have extremely light bumping. Dark orange cloth covered boards have gilt lettering to the spine and front cover of the book. The gilt lettering has darkened somewhat on the spine. The text pages are clean and bright. Endpapers are a solid off-white color. The edges of the text block have some light toning / darkening. The top edge of the text block is stained a reddish color (done by the publisher). The spine ends and corners of the dust jacket have a bit of very light bumping and rubbing. There is one very small semi-closed edge tear to the top spine end of the dust jacket. Overall, a nice clean, bright copy. "The scene is Bonn, a small provincial town elevated by the cold war to the artificial status of a capital city. The protagonists are British diplomats, their wives, and aspiring German politicians."

This book is in Near Fine condition and has a Near Fine dust jacket. The book and its contents are in clean, bright condition. There is a thin strip of beginning fading to the bottom front edge of the book cover. The text pages are clean and bright. The dust jacket is crisp and clean, with only some beginning edge wear / nicking to the spine ends and corners. " Snow covered the airfield. It had come from the north, driven by the night wind, smelling of the sea. There it would stay all winter, threadbare on the gray earth, an icy, sharp dust; not thawing and freezing, b ut static like a year without seasons. The changing mist, like the smoke of war, would hang over it, swallow up now a hangar, now the radar hut, now the machines; release them piece by piece, drained of color, black carrion on a white desert."
