Townsend, Virginia F. JOANNA DARLING or, the Home at Breakwater Boston, MA Loring, Publisher 1868 1st Edition; 1st Printing Hardcover Very Good+ with no dust jacket This book is in Very Good+ condition. The spine ends and corners of the book cover have some light rubbing, bumping and beginning fraying. Green cloth covered boards have gilt lettering to the spine of the book. There is a light slant to the spine. The book covers have several small spots of ground-in dirt and some light rubbing. The text pages are generally clean & bright, though there is some beginning foxing. The endpapers are a solid light yellow color which has toned, especially at the edges. There is a nicely inked previous owner's name and date (Dec. 25, 1869) on the front endpaper. There is an engraved frontispiece featuring Joanna Darling and a gentleman of middling years before the title page. The front joint has started and is a bit loose. Overall, a very solid, clean copy of an early girls series title. "Joanna Darling was the old man's granddaughter, and her life had just rounded into its twelfth summer, - a lonely life enough at the best, taking its root in a dry, barren soil, out of which it could draw few rich juices to nourish it into strength and beauty: and consequently, the small life, of which my story is to tell, had something bleached, thin, colorless, like Joanna's face."
