1 Shapley, Harlow FLIGHTS FROM CHAOS A Survey of Material Systems from Atoms to Galaxies
New York Whittlesey House 1930 1st Edition; 1st Printing Hardcover Very Good with no dust jacket
B&W Illustrations; This book is in Very Good condition. The book is in very good solid condition with some light rubbing, edge wear and fraying to the spine ends and corners of the book cover. The text pages are clean and bright. The rear inner hinge paper has cracked but the joint itself is solid. The front pastedown has the remnants of a removed book plate. "The thesis of this book was presented in a series of five lectures given in New York City in November and December 1929. Since then, the Supergalaxy Hypothesis has been further developed. Minor alterations have been made in classification and sub-classification throughout the series of material systems. There has evolved a clearer concept of the Cosmoplasma; interstellar and intergalactic space, which is traversed at all points with the radiation of all stars, is found to be of increasing significance because such regions are the graves of expiring stars and may contain the cosmic soil from which new suns and galaxies arise." From Wikipedia: "Post-graduation, Shapley received a fellowship to Princeton University for graduate work, where he studied under Henry Norris Russell and used the period-luminosity relation for Cepheid variable stars (discovered by Henrietta Swan Leavitt) to determine distances to globular clusters. He was instrumental in moving astronomy away from the idea that Cepheids were spectroscopic binaries, and toward the concept that they were pulsators.[1] He was the first to realize that the Milky Way Galaxy was much larger than previously believed, and that the Sun's place in the galaxy was in a nondescript location."
