"In this last volume of his trilogy on Catherine De Medici, Hugh Ross Williamson tells the story of the years 1585 to 1589, which were occupied by the - War of the Three Henries - and which Dumas, in his great series of Valois romances, did not have time to treat, as he had intended, before he became involved in politics and ruin. Yet these five years contain the events which, both dramatically and historically, complete the pattern of the period: the assassination of Henry, Duke of Guise, and his brother, Louis, Cardinal of Guise, by Henry III, the last Valois King of France; the famous - Day of the Barricades - when Paris first took to organised street-fighting; the events which preceeded the death of the most fascinating of the Guise women, Mary Queen of Scots; and the military threat which affected all Europe - the Spanish Armada."
