Williams, Tennessee SUMMER AND SMOKE New york New Directions 1948 1st Edition; 1st Printing Hardcover Very Good with no dust jacket Spine ends & corners of book covers have a bit of light bumping, rubbing & edge wear. Blue cloth covered boards have black lettering to spine of book. Both top and bottom spine ends of book cover have some beginning sunning, edge wear and very beginning fraying. Text pages are clean & bright. Endpapers are a solid cream color. Bottom of front pastedown has a previous owner's bookplate (looks to be from the 1940's with exotic south east asian beauties --half clothed-- standing in front of a thatch hut...there is no name on the book plate but looks vaguely Gaugin-ish). There is no dust jacket. This play was originally --" produced by Margo Jones at her theater in Dallas, Texas. It was later produced and directed by Miss Jones in New York, opening at the Music Box Theater, October 6, 1948, with Margaret Phillips and Tod Andrews in the two leading roles: Incidental music by Paul Bowles and setting by Jo Mielziner." This copy contains 4 black and white stills from the play -- most probably the New York production. Overall, a very good copy. The play has been dedicated to Carson McCullers.
