There is a previous owner's inked name on the front endpaper. The dust jacke has some rubbing, edge wear, several small edge tears , nicks and chips missing along with some very noticeable sunning to the spine. "This book is primarily concerned with the selection of an instruction set and related functional characteristics of a large high-speed digital computer. Except for cost and speed, these are the characteristics that do most to distinguish one computer from the next - yet they have received scant recognition in the literature so far. For example, every computer designer makes a choice between binary and decimal arithmetic, but this book contains the first non-superficial treatment of this fundamental aspect of computer design." The editor, Werner Buchholz was employed by IBM (International Business Machines ) for most of his celebrated career in Computer Science -- he is the man who coined the term byte and helped create the IBM Stretch (IBM 7030 Stretch) which was the first transistorized supercomputer. While the computer was not quite all that it was hyped up to be (it was to be the LARC, requested by the Lawrence Livermore Labs, but that project fell through) it did end up being sent to the Los Alamos National Laboratory at a discounted price. The technology, especially the Standard Modular System transistor logic turned out to be a very fruitful innovation and was used for a number of machines, large and small, over the next decade.

An Introduction to Ray Tracing, Glassner, Andrew S. (editor)
4 Glassner, Andrew S. (editor) An Introduction to Ray Tracing
London & San Diego Academic Press / Xerox PARC 1993 4th Printing Hardcover Fine
Graphs; This book is in Fine condition and was issued without a dust jacket. This is the 4th printing of this seminal text. According to Wikipedia: "In computer graphics, ray tracing is a technique for generating an image by tracing the path of light through pixels in an image plane and simulating the effects of its encounters with virtual objects. The technique is capable of producing a very high degree of visual realism, usually higher than that of typical scanline rendering methods, but at a greater computational cost. This makes ray tracing best suited for applications where the image can be rendered slowly ahead of time, such as in still images and film and television visual effects, and more poorly suited for real-time applications like video games where speed is critical." The book and its contents are in clean, bright condition. The text pages are clean and bright.

The text pages are clean and bright. "Problem oriented programming languages as they have developed over the last ten years essentially serve two purposes which somewhat crudely can be described by the terms man=man communication and man-machine communcation, respectively. As a carrier of information between humans, the problem oriented programming language is designed to express the essence of an algorithm in a way which is unambiguous and concise..." "ALGOL (short for Algorithmic Language) is a family of imperative computer programming languages, originally developed in the mid-1950s, which greatly influenced many other languages and was the standard method for algorithm description used by the ACM in textbooks and academic sources for more than thirty years. In the sense that the syntax of most modern languages is "Algol-like", it was arguably the most influential of the four high-level programming languages with which it was roughly contemporary: FORTRAN, Lisp, and COBOL. It was designed to avoid some of the perceived problems with FORTRAN and eventually gave rise to many other programming languages, including PL/I, Simula, BCPL, B, Pascal, and C."

Computer Arithmetic in Theory and Practice, Kulisch, Ulrich W. and Willard L. Miranker
7 Kulisch, Ulrich W. and Willard L. Miranker Computer Arithmetic in Theory and Practice
New York Academic Press 1981 012428650X / 9780124286504 1st Edition; 1st Printing Hardcover Very Good+ with No dust jacket as issued
Graphs; This book is in Very Good+ to Near Fine- condition and was issued without a dust jacket. The book and its contents are in clean, bright condition. The text pages are clean and bright. There is a previous owner's inked name stamp on the front endpaper. Even as late as the early 1980's getting computers to work with (and understand correctly) how to do arithmetic problem solving was still not a sure thing. This book covers some new (to that point) theories of computer arithmetic and also the implementation of arithmetic on computers. "Central to this treatise is the concept of semimorphism. Properties of this concept are directly derivable from the diverse models that we study here. The concept of semimorphism supplies an ordering principle that permits the whole treatise to be understood and developed in close analogy to principles of geometry, whereby the mapping properties of a semimorphims replace those of a group of transformations in a geometry."

This book is in Very Good condition, with library stamps to the endpapers and foredge of the text block along with several inked library notations. The text pages are clean and bright. "The goal of work in artificial intelligence is to build machines that perform tasks normally requiring human intelligence. Thus, prominent topics in the field include automatic methods for solving problems, understansding and translating languages, proving theorems, and recognizing speech sounds and visiual objects. Although many of these tasks are exceedingly difficult, several computer programs have been written whose performance begins to match that of humans." Nils J. Nilsson, according to Wikipedia: is one of the founding researchers in the discipline of artificial intelligence. " is one of the founding researchers in the discipline of artificial intelligence." and, " Although the basic idea of using logical reasoning to decide on actions is due to John McCarthy (McCarthy), Nilsson's group was the first to embody it in a complete agent, along the way inventing the A* search algorithm (Hart, Nilsson & Raphael 1968) and founding the field of automated temporal planning. In the latter pursuit, they invented the STRIPS planner (Fikes & Nilsson 1971), whose action representation is still the basis of many of today's planning algorithms. The subfield of automated temporal planning called classical planning is based on most of the assumptions built into STRIPS."

"This book is the first to be devoted exclusively to error-detecting and error-correcting codes for information transmission and storage systems. Some of the material has never been published before." Computer coding / programming evolved from very early punch card and magnetic tape, to actual languages which were read, compiled and interpreted by the computers starting in the early 1950's. These early languages were invented on a one-off basis by programmers who were employed by each corporation (IBM, Sperry-Rand, etc) for a specific computer and a specific use. It wasn't until the mid 1950's, with the invention of FORTRAN that a program became able multi-functional and less time-consuming to code. This particular book looks at dealing with programming errors for a number of early code styles (including Algebraic, Linear, Polynomial Rings and Galois Fields, Linear Switching, Cyclic codes, Bose-Chaudhuri, Hamming, Golay, MacDonald, and Reed-Muller codes). And is one of the first books published on the subject.

"The traditional methods of storing information so that it may later be recalled are classification and indexing. the index has been in the form of subject headings, either printed in sequence on a page or typed on cards which are filed in sequence. During the past few decades new forms of index have come into use: cards on which subjects have been coded in patterns of holes, and, experimentally at least, paper tape, magnetic tape, magnetic drums and disks and photographic film. Such indexes are mechanically searched, and their development has been distinct from - almost in opposition to - traditional forms." This book (updated with new information regarding the fast changes in this area of computer science, especially in the 1960's) discusses the very wide open field of categorizing, indexing and retrieving information from computer systems with the varying theories described and discussed.

"This monograph originated with a course of lectures on information theory which I gave at Cornell Univeristy during the academic year 1958-1959. It has no pretensions to exhaustiveness, and indeed, no pretensions at all. Its purpose is to provide, for mathematicians of some maturity, an easy introduction to the ideas and principals known theorems of a certain body of coding theory." "Jacob Wolfowitz (March 19, 1910 July 16, 1981) was a Polish-born American statistician and Shannon Award-winning information theorist. He was the father of former United States Deputy Secretary of Defense and World Bank Group President Paul Wolfowitz....Wolfowitz's main contributions were in the fields of statistical decision theory, non-parametric statistics, sequential analysis, and information theory. One of his results is the strong converse to Claude Shannon's coding theorem. While Shannon could prove only that the block error probability can not become arbitrarily small if the transmission rate is above the channel capacity, Wolfowitz proved that the block error rate actually converges to one. As a consequence, Shannon's original result is today termed "the weak theorem" (sometimes also Shannon's "conjecture" by some authors)."
