During the United States campaigns in World War I the AEF fought in France alongside French and British allied forces in the last year of the war, against German forces. Some of the troops fought alongside Italian forces in that same year, against Austro-Hungarian forces. The AEF helped the French Army on the Western Front during the Aisne Offensive (at Château-Thierry and Belleau Wood) in June 1918, and fought its major actions in the Saint-Mihiel and Meuse-Argonne Offensives in late 1918..he first American troops, who were often called "Doughboys", landed in Europe in June 1917. However the AEF did not participate at the front until late October 1917, when the 1st Division fired the first American shell of the war toward German lines, although they participated only on a small scale. A formation of regular soldiers and the first division to arrive in France, entered the trenches near Nancy."

"In the following chapters I have tried to record my impressions, observations, interviews and adventures on a somewhat extensive journalistic pilgrimage through Germany in war-time." "Since he habitually wore a top hat, monocle and spats, he became known as The Dude Reporter. He also appeared in newspaper stories himself, the stories often involving altercations of one sort or another. He went to Europe to cover the war, saying he was working for the British newspapaer Daily Telegraph, but he was also working for Hearst and INS. His stories came from within Germany, which certainly would have forbidden a correspondent from a British newspaper to enter, and their tone in the Hearst papers in 1915 is remarkably more neutral than the writing in his book Behind the German Veil, published in Britain in 1916 and in the United States after America entered the war. Even if de Beaufort was a con man and swindler, his book is well-written, very entertaining and sometimes informative."

This did not happen; either the women were sacked to make way for the returning soldiers or women remained working alongside men but at lower wage rates. But even before the end of the war, many women refused to accept lower pay for what in most cases was the same work as had been done previously by men. The women workers on London buses and trams went on strike in 1918 to demand the same increase in pay (war bonus) as men. The strike spread to other towns in the South East and to the London Underground. This was the first equal pay strike in the UK which was initiated, led and ultimately won by women."
