The covers have some generalized light toning and some light ground-in dirt. The text pages are clean and bright. There is a previous owner's inked git notatoin on the front inside cover of the book. The book looks to have the slickness of a professional publication, but I'm inclined to think this was a small press, or gift item produced by a family member. It also appears to be recipes compiled by family members for Nonna Bruni's birthday or anniversary (each recipe has citation, many of which are from Bruni family members) .

"Between 1843 and 1846, when California was a province of independent Mexico, five Mexican land grants totaling 113,135 acres (458 km2; 177 sq mi) were granted in Stanislaus County. Rancho Orestimba y Las Garzas, Rancho Pescadero and Rancho Del Puerto were located on the west side of the San Joaquin River, and Rancho Del Rio Estanislao and Rancho Thompson on the north side of the Stanislaus River. Additionally, in 1844 Salomon Pico received a Mexican land grant of 58,000 acres (235 km2; 91 sq mi) in the San Joaquin Valley, somewhere near the Stanislaus River and the San Joaquin River in what is now Stanislaus County. However, the grant was never confirmed by the Land Commission. "

The front cover of the book is decorated in green, black (or very dark green) and white in the image of a waitress. The text pages are clean and bright. There is a previous owner's name penciled on the front endpaper. The dust jacket has several edge tears, nicks and medium sized edge tears, along with a couple of sizeable chip missing,and one small circular spot missing on the spine of the book. There is a sticker shadow (from an apparent price tag) on the spine of the dust jacket. Scarce in dust jacket. "Janet McKenzie Hill (1852–1933) was a prominent early practitioner of culinary reform, food science and scientific cooking, author of many cookbooks. Hill was born in Westfield, Massachusetts, the daughter of Alexander McKenzie, a clergyman, and Nancy (Lewis) McKenzie. In 1873 she married Benjamin M. Hill. Hill took up the study of cooking and its related sciences later in life: she returned to school around age 40, graduating from the Boston Cooking School in 1892. Fannie Farmer was assistant principal at the time. In 1896 she founded the Boston Cooking School Magazine (later renamed American Cookery)." "The waitress, who understands the composition of food, the underlying principles of cookery and cleaning, the proper construction of menus, and who has had training of the reasoning powers and judgement that is incidental to such knowledge, has gained thereby a breadth of mind and quickness of perception, which fit her to meet any emergency that may arise. "Gian Franco Romagnoli (1926 – 15 December 2008) was an Italian chef, author, and television personality. He hosted The Romagnolis’ Table, an American program about Italian cookery, alongside his wife Margaret, from 1973 to 1975. Born in Italy, Romagnoli trained as a cameraman and a director. While working at a film studio, he met Margaret O’Neill, an American information officer for the Marshall Plan. She became his supervisor, and the pair married in 1952. Due to American government regulations, Margaret lost her job. The couple left for America in 1955. The pair moved to Watertown, Massachusetts, and Romagnoli got a job as a cameraman at WGBH-TV. He later worked as a cinematographer. After a trip back to Italy, the couple put forward the idea of an Italian home cooking program. The Romagnolis’ Table made its debut in 1973 and lasted until 1975. The show was originally broadcast on WGBH but was later shown by PBS. After the show ended, Romagnoli opened up a restaurant under the same name. The restaurant operated for 10 years and closed in 1989. Romagnoli also opened two sister restaurants and released three cook books."
