Berkeley, CA University of California, Berkeley / Lawrence Radiation Laboratory 1969 1st Edition; 1st Printing Pamphlet Near Fine with No dust jacket as issued
This is an oversized pamphlet with cardstock covers and a stapled binding. The pamphlet is in Near Fine condition and was issued without a dust jacket. (pub. 2a/15M/Nov. 1969). The pamphlet has some beginning spots of ground-in dirt to the rear covers and some very beginning rubbing to the front cover. The text pages are clean and bright. "The Bevatron is a proton Synchrotron, a machine that accelerates protons until their velocity is relativistic, i.e., almost as greatw as the velocity of light. The object is to increase the momentum of the protons so that they can be used as bullets for disruptin other atomic nuclei and producing large quantities of various subnuclear particles." The Bevatron was a precursor to the CERN / Hadron large particle accelerator (in Switzerland). From Wikipedia: ". The Bevatron was built to be energetic enough to create antiprotons, and thus test the hypothesis that every particle has a corresponding anti-particle.[3] The antineutron was discovered soon thereafter by Oreste Piccioni and co-workers, also at the Bevatron. Confirmation of the charge symmetry conjecture in 1955 led to the Nobel Prize for physics being awarded to Emilio Segrč and Owen Chamberlain in 1960." The Bevatron began operation in 1954 and was used continuously, though with tweaks and changes through the mid 1970's and was officially turned off on Saturday, Feb. 21, 1993. Many new subatomic particles were discovered through the use of the Bevatron and, later, when linked with the SuperHILAC linear accelerator, renamed the Bevalac during it's more than 4 decades of use. Only three copies noted in World Cat (UC Berkeley, Lawrence Radiation Lab & the New York Public Library)

Noise Sources Describing Quantum Effects in the Laser Oscillator Technical Report 453, Pauwels, Herman J.
9 Pauwels, Herman J. Noise Sources Describing Quantum Effects in the Laser Oscillator Technical Report 453
Cambridge, MA Massachusetts Institute of Technology Research Laboratory of Electronics 1966 1st Edition; 1st Printing Paperback Near Fine with No dust jacket as issued
Graphs; This is a technical Report with cardstock covers and a glued binding. This report is in Near Fine condition and was issued without a dust jacket. The report and its contents are in clean, bright condition. There is some light fading / toning to the gray cardstock covers. The text pages are clean and bright. "With quantum noise in the laser we mean those properties of the laser output that are caused by the quantum nature of the electromagnetic field and of the material systems and reservoirs with which it interacts. It is shown that a fully quantum-mechanical treatment of the laser can be formulated in a noise-source formalism, for which the noise sources are operators." The author, Herman J. Pauwels graduated with a Masters Degree from MIT in 1964 and was continuing on at MIT in the Ph.D. Program - this report is based on a thesis which was submitted by Pauwels to the Department of Defense which then partially fulfilled the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy. While at MIT Mr. Pauwels worked for the Bell Telephone company and while there is very little information on the author after this time, it appears he continued to work in the field of lasers and electronics / radio transmission and helped co-author several other articles (at least one can be found in the Journal of Quantum Electronics). There are five copies of this report found in Worldcat and currently none on offer to the trade.

Cambridge, MA Massachusetts Institute of Technology Research Laboratory of Electronics 1964 1st Edition; 1st Printing Paperback Very Good+
Graphs; This is a technical report with cardstock covers and a side-stapled binding. This report is in Very Good+ condition and was issued without a dust jacket. The covers have some light fading / toning to the spine and ground-in finger dirt. There is an ink stamp from the Industrial Liaison Office of M.I.T. on the front cover. The text pages are clean and bright. "The problem with which we shall be concerned is the noise performance of a multiterminal-pair amplifier used in conjunction with a multiterminal-pair signal source. We shall investigate the values of signal-to-noise ratio and exchangeable signal power that can be obtained at a single-output terminal pair by interconnecting such a source and amplifier." The author, William D. Rummler has received at least one patent in the area of radio communications and became a member of IEEE in 1989 for Radio Communication. He worked for a number of years for Bell Telephone. He is best known for his work in the area of Signal-to-Noise Ratio (which relates to this technical report) which measures the relationship of the signal to background noise that can hamper clarity. Very few copies of this copy are listed in Worldcat.

Especially since 1958, when reseach on problems of controlled fusion was declassified, many papers have been published on physical processes in fully ionized gases. Our understanding of many subjects has substancially increased. Two topics where the scale of effort and the increased understanding have been particularly striking are the nature and stability of hydro-magnetic equilibria and the propagation of infintesimal waves through a plasma." According to Wikipedia: "Lyman Strong Spitzer, Jr. (June 26, 1914 – March 31, 1997) was an American theoretical physicist and astronomer best known for his research in star formation and for his promotions of telescopes in space and research into plasma physics." The Spitzer Space Telescope, launched in 2003 was named in his honor.

(this experiment is known as the "Ives–Stilwell experiment"). This book includes letters to physicists, his own notes, experiments, etc., from and to Ives regarding his somewhat obsessive idea that Einstein's Theories were incorrect. This book is somewhat scarce.
