"This book contains the biographies of some fifty men and women who lived in California during the first half of the 19th century. A few were born here; most were immigrants, who blazed trails across the West, fought their way across the Sierras, settled in a raw new land and forever changed it. They came , not for gold, but for a new life in a new place."
