There is a previous owner's name inked on the front endpaper. "Jack Powers was one of the most spectacular, colorful and controversial figures in California during the Gold Rush decade. His main headquarters was Santa Barbara, but he was also well known in San Francisco, Los Angeles, San Luis Obispo and other coastal counties. He came to California with the New York Regiment in 1847 as a husky, handsome, rather reckless young man of Irish descent."
