"Salerno is, however, specially noted for the intellectual trend of life which it conducted at all times, and particularly during the Middle Ages, when the city kept the traditions of Greco-Latin culturew alive in Southern Italy, so that for many centuries it was called the urbe graeca, or Greek city. The celebrated Medical School also enters into this many-sided scheme of activity, even if it rose to greater renown in a particular field."
