"Stockton resident Herbert E. Ross may be best known as the pilot who gave Bob Hope a ride in his P-38 in Africa during WWII. His life has been mainly devoted to serving his country, first as a distinguished fighter pilot and Ace, and then as a teacher at the college level for fifteen years. The following is an excerpt from his book, Adventures of a P38 Ace. I had seen Bob Hope in several movies, but had never given him much thought. To me he was just another comedian. When Bob and his group came to our base in the summer of 1943, my Group Commander, Lieutenant Colonel Troy Keith chose my squadron to be the host for the day. They (Bob, Jack Pepper, Tony Romano, and Francis Langford) arrived in a C-47 (Goony Bird). There were several Air Force Troops with them as well as the C-47 crew."
