B&W Illustrations; Cloth edition. This book is in Very Good- condition and was issued without a dust jacket. The spine ends and corners of the book covers have some bumping, rubbing and small nicks and spots of fraying. The gilt lettering on the spine and front cover of the book have rubbed noticeably. There are several spots of discoloration to the covers. The text pages are generally clean and bright, though there are several spots of foxing throughout. The front endpaper has a previous owner's inked name and city along with a stamp from the A. M. Thayer Company. The front pastedown includes an ink stamped name and address. Born in New Hampshire and raised in Lowell, Massachusetts, Butler is best known as a political major general of the Union Army during the American Civil War, and for his leadership role in the impeachment of U. S. President Andrew Johnson. He was a colorful and often controversial figure on the national stage and in the Massachusetts political scene and ran several campaigns for Governor before his election to that office in 1882.
